Summer Reading Program 2010: Make a Splash at Your Library
We are proud to offer the beautiful story, Papa Dieux's Well, for the 2010 Summer Reading Program. This ecological tale with its themes of responsibility and sharing is also designed to bring awareness to the lengths that many people around the world must go in order to find clean drinking water.
Papa Dieux's Well: A Folktale from Haiti
When the animals are thirsty, Papa Dieux makes a well for them and puts Lizard in charge. But instead of sharing, greedy Lizard lets his power go to his head and hoards the water for himself while his friends go thirsty. Will Lizard get away with his greediness? Or will he learn that everyone has a right to water? Audience members will find out as they play a wide array of animal characters, speak in French/Creole, and learn to value one of our greatest natural resources, water.
Did you know:
Nearly one billion people lack access to clean water?
Nearly 70% of Haitians lack access to clean water?
In many countries around the world, children do not have the opportunity to go to school because they must search for clean drinking water most of the day?
